INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three people were shot along the canal early Saturday morning and police say a juvenile was among the wounded.
At 3:30 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, who were already patrolling downtown, quickly responded to the scene after they heard gunshots ring out from the area. IMPD then got calls reporting the shooting was near a gym in the 400 block of Indiana Avenue.
Two men and one male juvenile were both injured in the shooting. All are in the hospital in stable condition.
Police say multiple people were taken into custody, however it is unclear how they were involved. IMPD Public Information Officer Drew Brown says everyone likely knew each other and that this was an isolated incident.
“We had a few individuals involved in some sort of disturbance, who made the deliberate decision to bring firearms to a gym of our city — one of the most beautiful, family-friendly places in our city — and to bring violence to that area and to pull the trigger. Subsequently, lives were changed forever because of this,” Brown said.
The entire west side of the canal between New York and St. Clair streets has been closed for the investigation. Police have found bullet casings from both a handgun and a rifle in the area.
Brown expects the west side of the canal to be closed until midday, however he says the east side is still open to the public.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has video footage is urged to come forward to IMPD.
