GREEN BAY – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Tom Silverstein wrote a story this week ranking the players on the Green Bay Packers’ Week 1 53-man roster.
In that story, he ranked players based on their value to the team this year, not what the player might become in the future.
He does this every year, so we thought it would be interesting to see who made the biggest jumps and who fell the most from last season. Here’s what we found:
Edgerrin Cooper, three others jump the highest
Four players made significant jumps in the rankings, with second-year linebacker Edgerrin Cooper increasing in value the most. Cooper, who last year was selected to the Pro Football Writers of America all-rookie team and was twice named NFL defensive rookie of the month, went up 22 spots from No. 30 to No. 8.
Three more players jumped by double-digit numbers: defensive end Brenton Cox Jr. (18 spots from 50-32), cornerback Carrington Valentine (18 spots from 36-18) and quarterback Malik Willis (17 spots from 48-31).
In all, 23 players increased in value.
Dontayvion Wicks takes the biggest dive
On the flip side, receiver Dontayvion Wicks had the largest drop of 20 spots, from ninth to 29th. Interestingly, in last year’s rankings, Wicks had made the biggest jump from 2023, rising 35 spots from 44th to ninth.
Two more players fell by double digits: cornerback Bo Melton (14 spots from 28-42) and tight end Luke Musgrave (12 spots from 21-33). Melton’s drop coincides with his move from wide receiver to cornerback this season.
In all, 12 players decreased in value, two stayed the same − quarterback Jordan Love and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt − and 16 players on this year’s roster weren’t on the Week 1 roster last year.
