Softball Opens 2025 Season at Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational this Weekend


ELON, N.C.— The University of Pennsylvania softball team opens their 2025 season on the road in the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational tournament this weekend. 

The Field

With inclement weather in the forecast, the Quakers will now play four games in two days against Morgan State and Elon. Starting tomorrow morning (Feb. 14, 2025) at 11:00 a.m. against the Bears, the Red and Blue hope to open strong to set the tone for their season. Penn will have a quick turnaround tomorrow as they go to battle again in the evening at 4:00 p.m. against Elon.

Penn will have another busy slate on Saturday (Feb. 15) to close out the weekend. Following the same format as the previous day, the Quakers square off against Morgan State in the morning before facing Elon in the afternoon.

Quaker Notemeal

Penn will be spending the month of February on the road, slotted to play 14 games in three tournaments. After they finish with the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational this weekend, they will participate in the Mizuno Classic at Palmer Park in Virginia. The Quakers are scheduled to play Longwood, Delaware, Connecticut, and Virginia in the tournament (Feb. 21-23) before opening the month of March in Arizona for the Purple Classic at Grand Canyon University (GCU). The Red and Blue will square off against New Mexico, GCU, UNLV, and Utah State (March 7-9) in Phoenix, Arizona as they conclude tournament play.

Penn will have their home opener on March 11 against Rider at Penn Park, the first of 13 home games this season. 

Previewing the Bears

Morgan State enters the weekend 1-4 on the season, struggling early in their matchups in Clearwater, Florida. Their only win came in their season opener against Notre Dame, edging the Irish 5-4. Across their five-game tournament, the Bears gave up a total of 44 runs while only scoring 14. With losses from Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Bethune-Cookman, and Marshall, the Bears look to turn the page on the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Elon, North Carolina. 

Previewing the Phoenix 

Elon enters the weekend 1-4 on the season, hoping to move above .500 in their second tournament of the season. Hosting the Elon Softball Classic, the Phoenix suffered some difficult losses early against Ohio, Connecticut, Ohio State, and UNCG. Elon gave up a total of 33 runs in those four losses, only scoring 15 runs in those games. In their sole win of the season, the Phoenix showed promise offensively as they scored 13 runs against NC Central while only giving up 7.
