SEOUL – Veteran South Korean singer and songwriter Wheesung has been found dead, Yonhap News reported citing police on March 10.
The 43-year-old’s body was discovered at his home at Gwangjin-gu, northern Seoul, less than a month after actress Kim Sae-ron was found dead after her career had taken a hit following a drunk driving incident in 2022.
The fire authorities reportedly arrived at the artist’s house at 6.29pm after receiving an unspecified report from Wheesung’s family.
The authorities believe that a significant amount of time had passed before his body was found, based on the circumstances at the scene. They are currently investigating the cause of death.
Police were not immediately available for comment.
Wheesung, who debuted in 2002, made a name for himself as a ballad and R&B singer here with hits such as Can’t You (2002), Insomnia (2009), Even Thought Of Marriage (2010).
The singer came under fire after he was indicted on charges of illegally using propofol — a powerful anesthetic — in 2020. He was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, in his appellate trial in 2021.
The artist reportedly focused on live performances rather than television appearances after the court’s ruling.
He was scheduled to hold a concert at Exco in Daegu on March 15. REUTERS, THE KOREA HERALD/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK
