Mainland Regional High School alum Chase Petty has gotten the call to the majors.
Petty was the 26th overall pick in the
2021 Major League Baseball draft
In his most recent start at Triple-A Louisville, Petty allowed just one hit in six shutout innings on Wednesday with seven strikeouts and two walks. The Mainland graduate has a 3.52 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched this season in five starts.
Petty is the Cincinnati Reds’ 6th overall prospect, had a small taste of what the big leagues are like this spring, pitching in the Cactus League against the LA Dodgers. In that game, Petty threw three innings, striking out four, allowing just one run on four hits against the Dodgers.
Petty faced the Dodgers’ star-studded lineup, which included Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Teoscar Hernandez, keeping them off balance, giving the 2021 Mainland alum plenty of confidence entering the 2025 season.
“I feel like I showed the coaches that I belong right in the big leagues with the best of the best,” Petty told reporters after the game.
Well, maybe the Reds coaching staff remembers that night, because they are bringing him up to make his Major League debut on Wednesday.
For those who want to watch Petty’s debut with friends, Charlie’s in Somers Point will be having a watch party with specials to celebrate the occasion.
