KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Severe weather is expected to move into East Tennessee Friday night and last until Saturday morning. The storms could bring dangerous winds, flooding, hail and a chance for tornadoes.
Damage from the storm could also knock out power for some communities, and emergency management officials said people should prepare ahead of time to make sure they stay safe. They warned that if people rely solely on television to stay updated on the weather, they may miss the moment to take cover.
“Power outages are a big concern when it comes to alerting,” said an emergency management official.
He said several counties across East Tennessee have developed online services, through apps and websites, that keep people updated when there is severe weather. He also said people should keep weather radios nearby during storms, since the National Weather Service will broadcast updates through it.
“The main thing we want people to understand is that the power can go out while you’re sleeping. So, we want you to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts,” he said. “We want you to talk to your family about where your safe place would be. That’s the lowest level of your home, away from doors and windows.”
Most law enforcement and emergency management agencies across East Tennessee work to connect with their communities. Through different kinds of platforms, people living in the region can be immediately notified about different emergencies and get up-to-date information.
These can include weather incidents like tornadoes or severe storms, or any other kind of situation local leaders deem a threat to public safety. To receive these notifications, people usually need to sign up ahead of time.
