With each new season of American Idol, fans not only cheer for their favorite singers but also get the chance to make their dreams come true. With each contestant hoping to gain votes from fans, the power of naming the next American Idol rested in the hands of the viewer. Over the years, the fans helped singers like Jordin Sparks, Iam Tongi, Noah Thompson, and Abi Carter carve their names in American Idol history. But what exactly does the winner walk away with? And better yet, how much money do they win? Let’s break it down.
After getting through the emotions of winning American Idol, reality sets in for the singer as they will receive $125,000, according to The Sun. But that is just a taste as they will also receive a record deal. And if they complete that record, there is another $100,000. However, with a total of $250,000, the winner will also get a budget of $300,000 to record their first album. Climbing to $550,000, it’s easy to see why most winners break down on stage.
Although walking away with $550,000, there is a catch. That $300,000 wasn’t a gift but a loan of sorts. With the money going towards the winner’s first album, they must pay that money back from the future earnings of the record. But even having to pay back the $300,000, they still walk away with $250,000.
‘American Idol’ Contestants Receive A Few Perks For Being On The Show
While each contestant hoped to win American Idol, they received a small sum for just competing on the show. Given that the singer has to perform in front of millions of viewers each week, they are granted a wardrobe allowance of $400 an episode. And even better, they get to keep the clothes they purchased.
For those who happened to make it into the Top 24, they were compensated for their time on American Idol if they joined the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). Given the contracts put in place in 2016, the contestants received $910 for a half hour show, $1303 for a one hour show, and $1,571 for a two hour show. With most shows lasting at least an hour, the singers had the chance to make a little money for their time and talent.
But like anything in the entertainment industry, nothing is free. For a singer to join AFTRA, they must pay $3000 in dues. Needing to perform during two shows to make up for the price of AFTRA, the singer’s time on American Idol comes with a price. But that price didn’t matter for those who became the next American Idol.
