Mount Washington blanketed with snow from late season nor’easter

A rare May nor’easter pummeled the region with heavy rain, which temporarily shut down Orange Line train service in Boston and resulted in some vehicles getting stuck on flooded roads on Cape Cod.

As much as 7 inches of rain fell in areas of the South Shore, including Kingston, Duxbury, and Marshfield.

But the precipitation fell as snow in some higher elevations. In New Hampshire, 4.1 inches of snow was reported at the summit of Mount Washington Friday morning, and more snow could accumulate over the course of the day, officials said.

Meteorologist Dave Epstein shared an image of snowfall in Killington, Vt. on Thursday. On Wednesday, Killington Resort had posted on X that its bike park, golf course, and Adventure Center would be closed due to the weather.

In addition to soaking rain, Thursday’s late-season nor’easter brought strong winds as well, with gusts topping 60 to 65 miles per hour in Plymouth and Nantucket.

Some of the highest rainfall totals in Massachusetts included Woods Hole (5.96 inches), Plymouth (5.59 inches) and Falmouth (5.31 inches).

Not many lingering power outages were reported as of Friday morning. There were 1,338 customers without power as of 6:38 a.m., according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s outage map.
