NEED TO KNOW

  • A DoorDash executive was celebrating his mom’s birthday with family members on the boat that capsized on Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 21, a family spokesperson said
  • Joshua Pickles, the executive, and his father, Terry Pickles, reportedly owned the boat for less than a year
  • Eight people died, including Pickles and his parents, and two people survived the accident, which, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, occurred near D.L. Bliss State Park

Eight people who died in a boat accident on Lake Tahoe, including a DoorDash executive, were celebrating a birthday when the fatal incident occurred.

Eight people have died after the U.S. Coast Guard said a 27-foot gold Chris-Craft boat capsized near D.L. Bliss State Park on Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 21. Two other people survived.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office announced the identities of the eight individuals on Tuesday, June 24, including DoorDash executive Joshua Pickles.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, his wife Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard shared that her husband’s parents — Terry Pickles, 73, and Paula Bozinovich, 71  — uncle Peter Bayes, 72, and friends were also killed.

Sam Singer, a family spokesperson, said the group was celebrating Paula’s birthday on her son’s boat, which he bought about a year ago, according to the Associated Press and SFGATE.

The boat involved in the accident belonged to both Joshua and Terry, Singer said, describing the pair as “avid, experienced boaters,” SFGATE reported. The spokesperson said the father and son had used the boat twice after buying it less than a year ago.

Meanwhile, Joshua’s wife Jordan was home watching their 7-month-old daughter, per the reports. The couple wed about two years ago, and had homes along Lake Tahoe and in the Bay Area.

“No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake,” Jordan said in her statement. “Our hearts go out to those who tragically lost their lives and the two survivors of this unexpected and deadly storm on Lake Tahoe.”

Singer did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Ravi Inukonda, Chief Financial Officer at DoorDash, said Joshua worked for the company for nearly seven years and “brought a contagious spirit that lifted those around him.”

Eight died in the June 21 incident at Lake Tahoe in California, authorities said.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that took the life of our beloved colleague, Josh Pickles,” Inukonda said. “Josh loved his team and was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

He added, “The loss of Josh is immeasurable. We miss him deeply and will carry his memory with us always.”
