Naomi Osaka has been working with Patrick Mouratoglou since September 2024.
Osaka originally wanted to avoid Mouratoglou, something that she admitted last year after playing their first tournament together at the China Open.
There have been some promising moments during the former world number one’s tenure with Mouratoglou, including Osaka winning her first clay court title.
However, overall Mouratoglou admitted that Osaka’s results have not been great in recent months.
It has not just been coaching Osaka that has got Mouratoglou in the headlines, but also his comments on women’s tennis.
Mouratoglou has coached many top WTA players over the years, including Serena Williams, Simona Halep and now Osaka.
However, he recently landed himself in controversy at Roland Garros after Mouratoglou claimed there are no superstars in women’s tennis anymore.
Ahead of Wimbledon, these comments were brought to Osaka in her pre-tournament press conference as she gave her verdict on what her coach had said.
Despite claiming to not have known about Mouratoglou’s controversy, Osaka revealed that she was now going to speak to him about it.
Osaka also touched upon the big talking point of Roland Garros not placing women in the night sessions, something she suggested was ‘weird’.
“Oh, no, I didn’t hear that,” said Osaka. “But I don’t know, maybe we should do a powwow about the things that he says.
“Um. Totally off topic, but sometimes I scroll on Instagram and he pops up and I’m like, oh wow. And then I keep scrolling, but.
“You know what’s interesting is I’m probably the player that doesn’t pay attention to anything. Like, stuff that happens during tournaments, so usually I have someone update me, like, one of my team members.
“But no, as regards to what he said, I didn’t know that the French Open didn’t schedule any women, but that’s kind of… for how long? But didn’t I play Iga [Swiatek] at night? Oh, that was, like, afternoon or something?
“Um yeah, I mean, I think that’s kind of weird. Like, I do think women’s tennis has a lot of really big names or stars and I don’t know. I guess I’ll talk to him at practice about that today. I’ll let you know what he says.”
Naomi Osaka’s potential Wimbledon draw
Wimbledon is statistically one of Osaka’s worst performing Grand Slams, with the four-time major winner only winning five of her nine previous matches at SW19.
Osaka will play Australian qualifier Talia Gibson in the first round of this year’s tournament, with a big potential threat looming in the second round.
That threat is fifth seed and Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, who Osaka lost to on the grass of Berlin this year.
Some of the other big names floating in Osaka’s quarter of the draw include Diana Shnaider, Jelena Ostapenko and two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur.
