‘The Old Guard 2’ Ending, Explained

NEED TO KNOW

  • The Old Guard 2 follows a group of immortals led by Andy (Charlize Theron) as they protect humanity
  • The group’s plans get thrown for a loop when the first immortal, Discord (Uma Thurman), vows to destroy them
  • The Netflix sequel leaves off on a major cliffhanger

The Old Guard 2 is back for more action, adventure and immortal battles.

In the Netflix film, which is a sequel to 2020’s The Old Guard, a group of everlasting superheroes led by Andy (Charlize Theron) face off against one of their own. But Discord (Uma Thurman) isn’t just any immortal — she’s the first of their kind.

It all kicks off when the immortal Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo) — who had previously been punished to eternal drowning — comes back to life. However, she has no plans of joining Andy’s crew — instead, she wants to punish both mortals and immortals.

The film later reveals that Discord was the one who found and saved Quynh after 500 years so she could recruit her. Unlike the rest of the immortals, Discord does not think their immortality should be used to help mankind and wants to put a stop to their interference.

However, The Old Guard 2 ends with a major cliffhanger that’s left many fans wondering if a third movie is on the way. Here’s everything to know about how The Old Guard 2 ended, including the cliffhanger and the fate of the immortals.

Warning: The Old Guard 2 spoilers ahead!

The Old Guard 2 reaches its cinematic peak when Quynh and Discord break into a nuclear facility and trigger one of the radioactive bombs to potentially go off and kill millions of citizens. The group of immortals learns about the break-in through surveillance footage — and, although they realize that it could be a trap, they know they have no other choice than to stop the bomb from detonating.

Just as the group expected, they enter the facility and are immediately ambushed by dozens of armed gunmen. This ultimately leads to the capture of all group members except Andy and Quynh.

The final fight scene of the film shows Andy and Discord facing off in an intense matchup. The two go back and forth fighting and slashing each other with swords before Discord escapes. At the same time, Andy discovers that Discord has successfully captured all the immortals and placed them on a helicopter.

While they are fighting, Andy notices that one of Discord’s hand wounds didn’t automatically heal, and this leads her to believe that Discord has lost her immortality. Discord confirms that she is no longer immortal and captured the rest of the group in the hopes that they can transfer their powers onto her.

Unfortunately for Andy and the captured group of immortals, Discord wins the showdown and hops onto the helicopter.

The final scenes of the film shows Andy reuniting with Quynh in the secret immortal library. In the midst of the nuclear facility invasion, Nile (KiKi Layne) — who alone has the power to make immortals mortal — stabbed Quynh, making her mortal.

Quynh subsequently lets go of her past with Andy, and the two embark upon a mission to find Discord and rescue the rest of the group.

Why did Discord return?

After Quynh was punished, Discord left the group and worked to become the most powerful immortal of all time.

Discord makes her grand return by saving Quynh from the ocean, and the two join forces to stop the rest of the immortals. At first, Discord claims that the group is “playing God” and are “obsessed” in interfering with human affairs, which she wants to stop.

However, when Andy and Discord are fighting, Andy learns that Discord’s reason for returning has nothing to do with immortal interference. Discord confirms that that her immortality has gone away, and she will do anything in her power to get it back.

Discord confirms that she captured Nile because she alone has the ability to wound an immortal and take away their immortality. Immediately after an immortal’s power is taken, they can willingly transfer it to someone else. Discord explains that her goal is to force Nile to wound one of her group members and then force that person to willingly give her their powers.

Upon Quynh’s return, she immediately went on a quest to find Andy. The two met up in Italy, but things became violent after Quynh expressed how upset she was that Andy stopped looking for her in the ocean. Andy asks Quynh to join the rest of the immortals, but Quynh refuses and instead teams up with Discord.

However, their relationship changes during the altercation at the nuclear facility. Quynh becomes mortal after Nile slashes her, and Discord abandons her after she notices that the wound isn’t healing.

Andy and Discord reunite at the secret immortal library, where Quynh tells Andy that she was unaware of Discord’s mortality and true intentions. Quynh eventually learns to forgive Andy and move past their issues because of her newfound mortality.

What happened to the rest of the immortals?

Before the group enters the nuclear facility, Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) — who has always had a desire to be a mortal — discovers that Nile can take away his powers. He purposely lets Nile slash him with a sword. After that, he returns to Andy and silently transfers his immortality to her.

While Booker and Andy are fighting dozens of armed guards at the nuclear facility, Booker confides in Andy about what he’s done. Before she has time to come to terms with his actions, Booker dashes away and locks himself in a room, defending her from the guards. He’s able to kill most of them before he takes a knife straight to the chest and dies.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group — including Nicky (Luca Marinelli), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Tuah (Henry Golding) and Nile — is captured and taken away by Discord on a helicopter.

Since The Old Guard 2 left on a cliffhanger, fans are likely wondering if there is a third film in the works. However, Netflix has not officially announced whether or not there will be The Old Guard 3.

Greg Rucka, who co-created the series of graphic novels the movies were based on, originally said in 2020 that he thought of the movie franchise as a trilogy.

“There is a complete three-part story that can be told and, God willing if it’s a success, Netflix comes back and says, ‘Hey, let’s do it again,’ ” Rucka told Looper in 2022. “There’s more to tell, and there’s questions that we want to answer. But right now, I gotta tell you this: If this is all we get, I am going to be a very happy guy.”

Meanwhile, the sequel’s director Victoria Mahoney told Entertainment Weekly in July 2025 that she did “not know” whether or not a third film would be happening.

“I genuinely don’t know,” she told the outlet. “I don’t know what’s going on outside this room. So I have no idea. I hope for it, and I hope that audiences get it, and I hope everyone that goes to play on that third one has a ball and kicks a– and I’ll be rooting for them. I won’t be there, but I will be rooting for them. Sincerely, vigorously.”
