The Texas Rangers have selected high school infielder Gavin Fien with their first pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, #12 overall. This is the first time since 2018 that the Rangers have taken a prep player with their first round pick.
You can see our pre-draft write up of Fien here.
Fien is a righthanded hitting infielder out of Great Oak High School in Temecula, California. He has played shortstop as a high schooler, but is expected to move to third base as a professional. He is listed at 6’3”, 200 lbs. and turned 18 in March.
Fien was considered one of the top prep hitters in this draft class. He has both a nice hit tool and quality power, as well as good plate discipline. He was one of the prep infielders that the Rangers were said to be in on heading into the draft, and upon signing, he’ll probably be the second or third best prospect in the system.
