One Direction’s domination of culture in the early 2010s was total, whether they were selling out shows or just goofing off backstage.
Made up of five singers Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, who were put together by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger during season 7 of X Factor U.K., 15 years ago on July 23, 2010, One Direction didn’t win their season but still went on to become one of the biggest boy bands in the world.
After five years in the group, Malik announced his departure in March 2015. Styles, Payne, Horan and Tomlinson would continue as a quartet before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016. In the years since, each member has released solo projects and found success in their respective lanes Tragically, Payne’s life was cut short at age 31, after a fall from his hotel balcony in Argentina on Oct. 16, 2024.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” a statement released by Styles, Malik, Horan and Tomlinson read following Payne’s death. “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” the statement continued. “For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam. Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry.”
As a tribute to Payne’s life, and the band’s more than a decade’s worth of memories, here’s a look back at some of their most memorable moments caught on camera.
