Red Sox at Padres lineups and notes for August 9, 2025

Opposite him on Saturday will be Padres righthander Michael King, a Rhode Island native and former Boston College star.

The Red Sox’ 10-2 rout of San Diego in Friday’s series opener was Boston’s eighth win in nine games.

First pitch for Saturday’s game at Petco Park is at 8:40 p.m. Here’s a preview.

RED SOX (65-52): Anthony LF, Bregman 3B, Duran CF, Story SS, Yoshida DH, Toro 1B, Abreu RF, Rafaela 2B, Wong C

Pitching: RHP Lucas Giolito (8-2, 3.57 ERA)

PADRES (64-52): Tatis RF, Arraez 1B, Machado 3B, Merrill CF, Bogaerts SS, O’Hearn DH, Laureano LF, Cronenworth 2B, Fermin C

Pitching: RHP Michael King (4-2, 2.59 ERA)

Time: 8:40 p.m.

TV, radio: NESN, WEEI-FM 93.7

Red Sox vs. King: Wilyer Abreu 3-5, Alex Bregman 5-6, Jarren Duran 2-7, Romy González 0-1, Ceddanne Rafaela 1-5, Rob Refsnyder 0-1, Trevor Story 0-5, Abraham Toro 0-3, Connor Wong 2-5, Masataka Yoshida 0-4

Padres vs. Giolito: Luis Arraez 8-33, Xander Bogaerts 3-10, Elias Díaz 0-1, Freddy Fermin 0-5, Jose Iglesias 4-18, Ramón Laureano 0-3, Manny Machado 1-2, Ryan O’Hearn 4-28

Stat of the day: In Giolito’s last 10 starts, dating to June 10, he’s 7-1 with a 2.03 ERA. Sunday’s outing marked the first time in four years he’s completed eight innings in a game.

Notes: In Friday’s win, the Red Sox had 10 hits, drew eight walks and handed Padres ace (and former Red Sox) Nick Pivetta his first loss at Petco Park this year. … While Giolito will face San Diego for just the second time in his career, King (4-2, 2.59 ERA) can draw on 13 career outings against the Red Sox to form a game plan for his first start since May 18, a 6-1 loss to Seattle. … King hit the injured list after being scratched from his May 24 start in Atlanta and has been out with a long thoracic nerve issue that affected the strength in his right shoulder. King resumed playing catch in late June and ramped up his preparation late last month. … Taking a rehab start on Sunday for Triple-A El Paso, King was predictably rusty, allowing six runs in 3 1/3 innings to go with five strikeouts during a 61-pitch effort. … King is 3-4 with a 4.54 ERA in his career against Boston, while Giolito is 0-0 against the Padres, having given up four runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings in his one appearance, in 2016.
