Two Southern California rivals meet up in an important Major League Soccer matchup on Sunday, as the San Jose Earthquakes play host to San Diego FC.

Both teams head into Sunday’s slate of action on opposite ends of the playoff picture in the Western Conference.
San Diego is doing its part in proving that the club belongs in the MLS. While they are a new franchise, they have placed themselves among the league’s best in the opening months of the season. Following a 2-0 road victory over Sporting Kansas City last Saturday, San Diego has won back-to-back league matches, earning points in three consecutive contests in MLS play.
San Diego remains first in the West, four points up on the Vancouver Whitecaps, while sitting just two points behind the Philadelphia Union in the Supporters’ Shield standings.
San Jose is busy fighting for its playoff lives. A hard-fought 2-1 win over the Whitecaps last weekend, snapping a six-match winless drought, was crucial in keeping the Earthquakes in a Wild Card spot. San Jose is ninth in the conference, one point ahead of Real Salt Lake.
