BGE urging customers to conserve electricity amid power plant ‘disconnection’ from system

Baltimore Gas and Electric is asking customers to conserve electricity through Monday evening due to an unplanned disconnection at a power plant, which may lead to temporary outages.

BGE said it has coordinated with the plant’s owner to make the necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible. PJM Interconnection is also evaluating whether there is enough power in the region.

“We are asking all BGE customers to conserve electricity beginning immediately and through this evening, a BGE spokesperson said. “Energy conservation helps reduce the potential for an outage.”

If an outage becomes necessary, BGE said it will make efforts to alert customers in advance.

In a statement on the potential for outages, Gov. Wes Moore’s office said:

“The Moore-Miller Administration has been in constant communication with BGE throughout the day concerning the rolling outages that impacted Marylanders in concentrated areas across central Maryland. BGE reports that the portions of the transmission system that were inoperable this morning have now been restored; they continue to assess and repair the system as needed.

“We continue to coordinate with our partners across the public and private sectors, in addition to local leadership, to ensure appropriate preparedness and support. As BGE and PJM continue after-action efforts to ensure that restored power is sustained, Marylanders are encouraged to continue to conserve energy. For more information and updates, visit bge.com.”

In a statement on X, Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport said:

“BGE has informed us of a possible power outage this afternoon due to an interruption at a regional power plant.

“While this is not currently impacting our facilities, we are taking precautionary measures to conserve energy and lessen the demands to the power grid.

“Please be patient and calm this afternoon in the event of an outage while you are in the terminal.

“Additional information will be provided, as necessary.

Preparing for outages:

– Store a supply of bottled water and easy-to-prepare, non-perishable foods.

– Charge cell phones, computers, electric vehicles, and other battery-powered electronic equipment.

– Customers with landlines should keep a corded phone to report outages if cell phones lose power.

– Have a flashlight with fresh batteries on each floor of your home.

– Customers requiring refrigeration for medication or electricity for medical equipment should have alternate arrangements in place in the event of an extended power outage.

Conserving energy, if your health permits:

– Monitor your thermostat.

– Turn on ceiling fans or standalone fans.

– Close blinds, shades, and drapes.

– Delay the use of major, heat-generating household appliances such as ovens, stoves, dishwashers, and dryers.

– Turn off non-essential appliances, electronics, and other devices.
