A Chicago police officer was shot and killed just before 10 p.m. Thursday on the city’s South Side, the Chicago Police Department confirmed.
About 9:50 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Drexel in the city’s East Chatham neighborhood, officers with the 6th District Tactical Team were on patrol when they attempted to conduct an investigatory stop on a male suspect, police said.
As officers approached, the suspect fled into a nearby building, police said.
Officers continued to pursue the suspect into the apartment, where they were confronted by someone inside who was armed. An officer then discharged his weapon, police said.
The armed suspect then fled the residence and was taken into custody a short time later, police said. It wasn’t immediately clear how many suspects were involved, or how many people fired weapons.
During the encounter, a female officer officer was struck by gunfire and transported to a nearby hospital. She was later pronounced dead, police said.
CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said the fallen officer had processed two guns earlier in her shift prior to the fatal shooting.
Snelling also said the squad car used to transport the officer had caught fire en route due to a “malfunction,” and the officer was transferred to another squad car.
A procession took place overnight from the hospital to the Medical Examiners officer, with dozens of officers lining the streets.
