DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) – A man has been charged for a fire attack Wednesday on Danville City Councilman J. Lee Vogler, who is being treated in a hospital.
No word has been released regarding Vogler’s condition.
Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding following the attack by burning.
Danville Police say Vogler was attacked Wednesday, July 30. Around 11:30 a.m., officers and firefighters were called to the 700 block of Main Street.
Based on witness information, the attacker walked into Vogler’s workplace, Showcase Magazine, confronted him and doused him with a flammable liquid, according to Danville Police. The victim and suspect walked out of the building, where the man set the victim on fire.
The incident did not take place on city property.

The suspect then left the scene, according to police, but was taken into custody after a traffic stop soon after.
Police say the victim and suspect know each other and the attack stems from a personal matter not related to the victim’s position on Danville City Council or any other political affiliation.
