Eden Prairie police seeking information on hit-and-run that seriously injured young child

Eden Prairie police are looking for the person responsible for a hit-and-run that seriously injured a child around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators say a woman and four children were crossing the street in a crosswalk at Mitchell Road and Chestnut Drive. The woman was pulling two of the children in a wagon when a white vehicle hit them and drove off.

The vehicle hit the woman and the two children in the wagon, one of whom is in critical condition. The woman and the other children are expected to be OK. Police say the children are ages four and under.

“We have recovered plastic from the driver’s side mirror,” says Sgt. Bryan Dean, with the Eden Prairie Police Department. “We’re actively working on obtaining additional details about the vehicle to help identify the suspect.”

If you have any information or surveillance video of the crash or the vehicle, call Eden Prairie Police at 952-949-6200. You can also submit evidence online here.

“Just really sad, terrible. People shouldn’t be hit in a crosswalk,” says Cheryl Hustad, who lives nearby. “I think people on Mitchell Road, they drive too fast, all around here. I’ve seen people stop in the crosswalk, but all it takes is one person to cause an issue, might hurt somebody.”

Police also asked the driver, or anybody who knows who it was, to “do the right thing” and come forward. There will also be a monetary reward offered through the Eden Prairie Crime Fund for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of the driver, police said.

“The intersection over there, it’s been a concern to our neighbors, and I’ve lived here over 20 years,” says Tom Mlazgar, a neighbor. “There’s a bright green sign that says pedestrian crossing; they’re fixed into the road, nobody stops for it.”
