BOX ELDER, S.D. – Ellsworth Air Force Base was put on lockdown Thursday evening following an alert reporting an active shooter,
Shortly after 9 p.m., an alert was sent to base personnel stating, “EAFB Active Shooter LOCKDOWN, LOCKDOWN, LOCKDOWN ACTIVE SHOOTER. Please remain indoors and await further instructions. REAL WORLD.” A screenshot of this alert was obtained by NewsCenter1. A subsequent alert, sent at 9:28 p.m., provided an “UPDATED REPORT No Active Shooter” and indicated “Shots in the area of base/off base Security Forces is working the situation. Stay put.”

NewsCenter1 contacted Ellsworth Air Force Base Security Forces, who confirmed they were responding to reports of shots fired in a base housing area. Security personnel emphasized that it was not an active shooter situation. In a follow-up call at approximately 9:26 p.m., Security Forces told NewsCenter1 that the base was no longer on lockdown.
