EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – A local Evansville 12-year-old pulled a signed Babe Ruth baseball card with his grandfather earlier this week.
Keegan says he was opening baseball cards Monday with his grandfather, Bob Kenning, when they pulled the rare card.
“It was President’s Day, we had nothing better to do; Keegan calls me up and says, ‘Hey Pawpaw, why don’t we go to Hobby Den?’” Bob says.
Bob says in his youth, cards were just added decor for rides around the block.
“A lot of my cards wound up in my bicycle spokes to make my bike sound better,” he says.
For Keegan, he says they are a collector’s item.
“I would say I have close to ten thousand cards,” Keegan says.
The grandfather-grandson duo pulled a one of one signed Babe Ruth baseball card.
David Nguyen, owner of The Hobby Den, says he was stunned to see the two find the card.
“Babe Ruth signatures just aren’t common in general” Nguyen says. “Just seeing something like that, that’s what the hobby is all about.”
Bob and his grandson say its a moment they will never forget.
“When we can share this hobby together and have a grandfather-grandson bonding time, that’s priceless right there,” Bob says.
Keegan says although the card could be worth a lot of money, he will not be selling it.
“I think I’m going to hold on to it, definitely,” Keegan says. “It’s just a once in a lifetime pull, and I probably will never get anything just like it.”
