Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Williams suffered an injury before training camp with the Los Angeles Chargers and was placed on the physically unable to perform list.
Williams can be removed from the list at any point during training camp. It is unknown what the severity of the injury is at this point, but Williams was one of five players who ended up on that list for the Chargers.
He signed a one-year deal to return to the Chargers this offseason. Williams was traded to the Steelers from the Jets for a fifth-round pick just before the 2024 trade deadline. All in all, in his first year coming back from an ACL tear, Williams took a step back. He had just 21 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown, which came against the Washington Commanders to help the Steelers pull off that upset.
In his introductory press conference with the Chargers in March, Williams acknowledged it was a ‘terrible year’ for him.
“Last year was terrible for me. I’m just being honest. It was terrible. Probably the worst year I’ve had in the league by far,” Williams said. “So I’m just putting it in the past, that was the past, and I’m trying to make it feel like it didn’t happen for me.”
Williams was the Chargers’ first-round pick of Clemson in the 2017 NFL Draft and became a key jump ball wide receiver for the team throughout his career. Now, he returns to a familiar team and culture that should enable him to regain his form.
