The Padres dropped the opener of their four-game series at Dodger Stadium Monday night.
But three Padres — Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Gavin Sheets — continued to swing hot bats.
— Machado had a solo home run and a sacrifice fly in three at-bats. The home run was his 11th of the season and his eighth in his last 23 games. Monday was also his third straight, two-RBI game and he has 25 of his season total of 45 RBIs over the last 23 games. Since his HR/RBI surge began, Machado has gone 31-for-92 (.337) with four doubles, the eight home runs and 25 RBIs plus seven walks, a stolen base and 15 runs for a .384 on-base percentage and a .641 slugging percentage for a 1.025 OPS.
— Tatis was 2-for-4 Monday with a run scored. He is 10-for-17 with three doubles, three RBIs, a walk, a stolen base and seven runs scored in a four-game hitting streak for a .588/.611/.765/1.376 slash line.
— Sheets had a double and a walk in three at-bats Monday to stretch his hitting streak to a career-best seven straight games. He is 10-for-25 (.400) during the streak with three doubles, a home run, two RBIs, four walks and four runs for a .483/.640/1.123 slash line.
PADRES BITS:
— RHP Dylan Cease fell to 2–6 and his earned run average climbed to 4.69 Monday after the Dodgers got to him for 6 runs on 8 hits and a walk against 9 strikeouts in 5 innings. The Padres are 8–7 in Cease’s 15 starts this season with only five of those classified as quality starts. Last year, Cease had a 3.47 ERA, a 1.067 WHIP and a .200 opponents’ batting average. His WHIP in 2025 is 1.326 and his OBA is .249.
— RHP David Morgan gave up a hit and a walk with 2 strikeouts in 2 scoreless innings Monday night to lower his ERA to 2.53. He has 13 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings in 9 appearances.
PADRES’ MINOR LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
Right-handed starting pitcher Matt Waldron (Triple-A El Paso) — In 2 starts for the Chihuahuas last week, the Padres’ knuckleballer went 2–0 while giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks with 9 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings. Waldron, 28, who started the season on the Padres’ injured list, is 3–1 in 4 starts at El Paso with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.373 WHIP.
Infielder Ripken Reyes (Double-A San Antonio) — The versatile, switch-hitting, University of San Diego product went 6-for-16 (.375) last week with three triples, a home run, 10 RBIs, 4 walks, a stolen base and seven runs scored in his return to the Texas League for a .500 on-base percentage and a .938 slugging percentage for a 1.438 OPS. The Padres’ 30th-round pick in the 2019 amateur draft, Ripken is hitting only .209 after 23 games for the Missions this season. But he has 12 walks against only 5 strikeouts and has 3 doubles, 3 triples and a home run for 16 RBIs for a .349/.388/.737 slash line.
Left-handed starting pitcher Luis Gutierrez (High Single-A Fort Wayne) — The 21-year-old Venezuelan starred in his first start for the TinCaps Sunday, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and a walk with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings. The 6-foot, 175-pound Gutierrez was 2–3 with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.040 WHIP in 10 appearances (6 starts) with Single-A Lake Elsinore before being promoted.
Left fielder-first baseman Kaden Hollow (Single-A Lake Elsinore) — The 24-year-old, left-handed hitter was signed by the Padres’ in 2022 as an undrafted free agent. He was 6-for-19 for the Storm last week with 3 doubles, 4 RBIs, 5 walks and four runs for a .316/.458/.474/.932 slash line. For the season, he is hitting .277 (48-for-173) for Lake Elsinore with 12 doubles, a home run, 33 walks (against 29 strikeouts) and 22 runs for a .390/.364/.754 slash line.
First baseman-left fielder Albert Fabian (Arizona Complex League) — The 6-foot, 215-pound, left-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic went 7-for-16 (.438) in a four-game hitting streak last week with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, a walk and 4 runs scored. He has made only seven starts in the ACL this year, going 9-for-25 with 2 doubles, 4 RBIs, 2 walks, a stolen base and 6 runs for a .360/.429/.440/.869 slash line.
Middle infielder Jose Verdugo (Dominican Summer League) — The 5-foot-9, 150-pound, 17-year-old from Los Mochis, Mexico, was 7-for-15 for the Padres Gold last week with 2 doubles, a home run, 7 RBIs, 3 walks, a stolen base and 6 runs for a .467/.556/.800/1.356 slash line. He is 12-for-26 on the season with 13 RBIs and 10 runs in 9 games with a .462/.568/.654/1.221 slash line.
AROUND THE FARM:
ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE PADRES (9–24) — Athletics 9, PADRES 8: C Yoiber Ocopio (.234) was 3-for-5 with a double, 3 RBIs and 2 runs. DH Albert Fabian (.360) was 2-for-5 with a double and 2 runs. SS Emil Turbi (.241) was 2-for-5 with a RBI.
DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES — Guardians at GOLD (6–4) postponed by rain (will be made up July 5). Brown (4–5) game at Reds suspended by rain in the fourth (will be completed on July 1).

June 17, 1977 — OF Jerry Turner hits the first of his franchise-record career nine pinch-hit homers that he would hit through 1981. Turner’s three-run shot leads the Padres to a 4–3 win over the Cardinals at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
