CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – On Wednesday, new information came out about a man police said falsified a hit-and-run incident in Cedar Rapids, and whose family started a “GoFundMe” page to try and raise funds.
The incident took place on the 1800 block of Edgewood Rd. NW. last week. David Glandon originally told police three teenagers in a blue Nissan with a Xavier High School sticker taunted him and intentionally forced him off the road. A family member started a “GoFundMe” page to help with his injuries. Police said when they later questioned him, he admitted his claims were false, and he recanted his story.
The original page set up by a family member featured a picture of Glandon’s injuries and asking for money to cover medical costs. It said, “Stand with Dave: Overcoming the Hit and Run.” The fundraiser was updated with a hew headline and the organizer “currently disabled new donations to the fundraiser”. But it had already been raised to more than $1500 with one person offering $500. I asked the police this afternoon if more charges could come from raising money under false pretense.
A police spokesperson told TV9 it was unlikely to happen because they’d need to prove there was an “intent to fool somebody” and because it was started by a family member, that would be difficult.
TV9 also reached out to “Go Fund Me” about the page and what would happen to the money.
“At GoFundMe, being a safe and trusted place to give and receive help is our top priority. This fundraiser is currently under review by GoFundMe’s Trust & Safety team, which has reached out to the organizer to gather additional information. All funds remain safely held by our payment processors as part of our standard review process. We take any suggestion of misuse very seriously. If any donor would like to request a refund in the meantime, we will process it for them.”
