Austin FC looks to stay up in the top seven of Major League Soccer’s Western Conference when they head north on Sunday night to take on Sporting Kansas City.

Austin is right on the cusp of becoming a Wild Card team if it is not careful. The club has picked up points in six of its last seven MLS contests, including an important 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday. Austin has gone 3-1-3 over that span, having dropped a 3-2 decision on the road against CF Montreal. With a little over a month to go in the regular season, there is a chance ATX could move up the Western Conference standings to host a first-round match, but they could also end up in the Wild Card round, if not miss the playoffs entirely.
Heading into Sunday, Austin is seventh in the West, two points ahead of the eighth-place Colorado Rapids and six points behind the Seattle Sounders for fourth.
Sporting KC is not entirely out of the playoff conversation yet, but they have a lot of work to do to qualify. Even after ending a four-match losing streak last Saturday, beating the Rapids 4-2, Kansas City is 13th in the conference, eight points back of the Earthquakes for the last Wild Card spot.
