One of the biggest movies of 2025, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, has finally dropped its first trailer. Kind of. On social media accounts, Netflix has posted a 12-second teaser trailer that features a creepy old church steeple and some ominous music. Frankly, it could be the opening of an old vampire movie, or a variety of different types of classic horror flicks. And even though he doesn’t appear, this teaser signals the return of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, the detective who first took the world by storm in 2019’s Knives Out.
But what does this teaser even mean? Along with the moody teaser, Netflix added this quote: “The wicked desire the stronghold of evildoers, but the root of the righteous endures.” This is a Bible quote, coming specifically from Proverbs 12:12.
Like Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022), Wake Up Dead Man will be a stand-alone sequel to the previous two movies, insofar as yet again, Benoit Blanc will be solving a whodunit mystery that involves a variety of suspects, all played by well-known actors. What the movie is actually about is, at this time, unknown.
That said, the new teaser almost certainly confirms the movie’s release date.
Wake Up Dead Man Release Date Teased?
Some critics, including Megan Garside at Games Radar, think that the trailer is teasing a release date. Because the quote comes from Proverbs 12:12, there’s a good bet that the movie will come out on 12.12.25. Because director Rian Johnson loves puzzles and obscure clues, it seems very likely that 12.12 is the big detail getting teased here.
Wake Up Dead Man has a stacked cast. In addition to Craig’s return, the movie stars Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Thomas Haden Church, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Mila Kunis.
