Baltimore picked up the contract of fellow catcher Chadwick Tromp, who saw some action with the Orioles back in May. To make some room on the roster for him, infielder Ryan Mountcastle has been placed on the 60-day IL.
Handley was just recalled by the Orioles a day prior to his injury to replace Adley Rutschman, who suffered a left oblique strain. With Handley’s sudden injury, there is no timetable for his return.
What’s the catching situation now for the Orioles?
Tromp will serve as the primary backup to Gary Sanchez behind the dish, as both Handley and Rutschman are shelved with injuries for the time being. Regarding his time with the club in May, it was a similar situation as he was brought up to harbor the catching front as both Sanchez and Rutschman were on IL stints of their own.

Rutschman would later return from concussion protocol, and Tromp would be the corresponding move to his return, but he returned on a minor league deal in which he has put up solid numbers down in Triple-A.
Regarding Mountcastle, his 60-day IL stint will be retroactive back to his original 10-day IL announcement which was reported at the end of May. The injury he sustained was a right hamstring strain and it was confirmed that he would miss close to 8-12 weeks.
