Sabalenka eyes Serena’s feat, Anisimova No 8, Kartal ahead of Raducanu

Aryna Sabalenka will once again emerge as a big winner in the top 10 of the WTA Rankings after Wimbledon while defending champion Barbora Krejcikova finds herself at the other end of the scale.

With the semi-finals set, only three matches remain at the 2025 grass-court Grand Slam, with Sabalenka taking on Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek facing Belinda Bencic for a place in the Championship match on Saturday.

There will be a new name on the Venus Rosewater Dish as all four players are looking to reach the Wimbledon final for the first time.

In terms of the WTA Rankings Winners and Losers, Sabalenka was always assured of remaining No 1 after the tournament, but by reaching the last eight she has notched up a new milestone as she has moved to second on the list of most ranking points.

WTA Top 10 Before Wimbledon

1. Aryna Sabalenka – 11,640 points
2. Coco Gauff – 7,899
3. Jessica Pegula – 6,483
4. Iga Swiatek – 4,943
5. Jasmine Paolini – 4,806

7. Mirra Andreeva – 4,743
8. Madison Keys – 4,484
9. Paula Badosa – 3,684
10. Emma Navarro – 3,610

Sabalenka started Wimbledon just behind Iga Swiatek (11,695) in terms of highest all-time ranking points, but by winning her opening match she moved past the Pole and has since gone on to become only the second player to crack the 12,000-point feat, behind only Serena Williams.

The Belarusian didn’t have any points to defend as she didn’t compete at Wimbledon last year due to injury. So far she has already added 780 points to her tally, taking her to 12,420, and if she wins the tournament, she will beat Williams’ total of 13,615, which was achieved in 2013.

Swiatek has reached the semi-finals for the first time and she has gained 650 points, but for now it’s not good enough to return to the top 3. The five-time Grand Slam winner will only gain a place if she wins the title.

Mirra Andreeva has reached the top five for the first time as she is projected to rise two places after reaching the quarter-final while Anisimova is the other winner as she will climb into the top 10.

For now, the American is up four places to No 8, but she could finish as high as No 5 if she wins the title, bumping Andreeva down to sixth.

Other Big Winners

Just a year after giving birth to her first child, a girl named Bella, Bencic has reached the Wimbledon semi-final for the first time in her career. She started the year at No 421 and by the time Wimbledon started she was at No 35.

Former world No 4 Bencic is set to return to the top 20 as she is projected to rise 15 places to No 20 and could be as high as No 12 if she wins her maiden Grand Slam trophy on Saturday.

2021 French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova lost against Anisimova in the last eight and she is set for a 20-place surge to No 30.

Staying inside the top 50, the British No 1 title will change hands again as Emma Raducanu was at No 40, Katie Boulter No 43 and Sonay Kartal at No 51.

Boulter will regain top spot after the tournament as she will move to No 40 with Kartal up seven places to No 44 after reaching the fourth round while Raducanu is down to No 45.

Laura Siegemund was the other surprise quarter-finalist with her run ended by Sabalenka, but the German will jump 50 places to No 54. Lucky loser Solana Sierra was beaten by Siegemund in the fourth round and she will be rewarded with a 34-place rise to No 67.

The Big Losers

Defending champion Krejcikova needed three sets to win both her first-round and second-round matches, but she fell to Emma Navarro in the third round and that was always going to result in a slump. She will be down 61 places to No 77 as she will drop 1,870 points after the tournament.

Donna Vekic reached the semi-final in 2024, but she lost in the second round this year and will slip 27 places to No 52. The Croatian beat Lulu Sun in last year’s quarters and the latter was a first-round loser and is projected to be -45, dropping to No 92 when the rankings are updated after the tournament.

Former Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur’s slide also continues as she is set to be down 12 to No 71 while Maria Sakkari is -10 to No 87.
