NEW ORLEANS — The pads were back on for Day 7 of New Orleans Saints training camp, and despite the sweltering heat, the energy and intensity were undeniable. WWL sports reporters Doug Mouton and Ricardo LeCompte were on the sidelines to break it all down.
Quarterback Reps Rotation Raises Eyebrows
The biggest surprise from Wednesday’s session was how the Saints are divvying up reps at quarterback. Second-round draft pick Tyler Shough saw very limited action, working almost exclusively with the third team and throwing only a handful of passes.
Spencer Rattler continues to look like the most polished of the group, despite tossing an interception on a deep ball that hung too long in the air. Cornerback Quincy Riley came down with the pick—his second interception of camp so far.
Jake Haener also got a healthy share of reps, and while the WWL sports team says he is not widely viewed as a serious contender for the starting job, the staff is clearly giving him opportunities to show what he can do.
On the defensive side, second-year corner Kool-Aid McKinstry continued to impress, delivering a perfectly timed pass breakup on a deep route intended for Rashid Shaheed.
WWL sports reporter Ricardo LeCompte says he’s stepping into that CB1 role, and so far, he’s handling it well.
Kellen Moore also lit up when asked about McKinstry after practice.
Trench Battles Bring the Heat
If Tuesday had a highlight reel moment, it was the one-on-one drills between the offensive and defensive lines. Taliese Fuaga, Kelvin Banks, Eric McCoy, and even Trevor Penning all had strong reps.
WWL sports director Doug Mouton thought the offensive line held their own, and he says that Penning had a great rep against Bryan Bresee.
