SHAWANO COUNTY, Wis. — With spring weather growing more severe across Wisconsin, local officials are urging families to have a plan in place in case disaster strikes.
“This is a good time to talk with your family about severe weather preparedness,” said a representative from the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department. “Practice where you would go, and how you would reconnect if you weren’t all in the same place when a storm hits.”
Officials recommend sheltering in a safe space inside the home—preferably on the lowest level, in an interior room without windows or exterior walls. Basements remain the best option when available.
Beyond finding a safe shelter, emergency planners say it’s just as important to have a communication strategy.
“Where will you meet if you’re separated? How will you check in with each other? Having those answers ready before a storm makes a big difference.”
In coordination with Menominee County Emergency Management, local Human Services, and the American Red Cross, Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department staff have been training for emergency response. That includes practicing shelter operations to be ready at a moment’s notice.
“If the Shawano County Emergency Manager declares a shelter is needed, we’ll be the first ones there,” the health department said. “We’re trained to greet people, assess basic needs, and keep residents safe while waiting for Red Cross to arrive.”
Once open, shelters provide a place to charge phones, seek minor first aid, and regroup after damage. More serious injuries will be referred to local hospitals.
The bottom line, officials say, is to take time now—before the next storm hits—to prepare.
“A few minutes of planning today can make all the difference when the skies turn dark tomorrow.”
