Sean McDermott gives another lengthy injury update
The Bills are still a banged up team as they head into their preseason finale at Tampa Bay Saturday.
ORCHARD PARK – Tre’Davious White, who the Buffalo Bills are counting on to start at cornerback along with Christian Benford, left Thursday’s practice at Highmark Stadium with some type of leg injury.
It appeared to be a non-contact injury and White hobbled to the sideline with the help of trainers, then jabbed in frustration at the wall that rings the field, which was not a good sign.
Nor was the fact that after he walked into the tunnel leading to the game day locker room, a cart was summoned and he was transported back to the fieldhouse locker room in order to keep him off the leg.
Tre’Davious White injury history
White suffered a torn ACL on Thanksgiving night 2021 and missed the rest of that season and more than half of 2022 while recuperating. In Week 4 of 2023, he blew out his Achilles and missed the rest of that season, and before 2024 began, the Bills released him.
After a year with the Rams and Ravens, White re-signed with Buffalo this offseason in the hope that he could recapture some of his former glory, and when rookie first-round pick Maxwell Hairston suffered a knee injury three weeks ago at St. John Fisher University, White was thrust into the starting role.
It hasn’t gone particularly well as he did not have a great game against the Giants, and then in the joint practice with the Bears he was vulnerable on a few reps. Still, he’s the best alternative the Bills have on their roster because the depth behind him and Benford is spotty at best with the likes of Dane Jackson, Ja’Marcus Ingram, Daequan Hardy and rookie sixth-round pick Dorian Strong.
Jackson, who has endured his one struggles after re-signing with the Bills following a year with the Panthers, spoke to reporters after the practice and was asked about White.
“Injuries are a part of football, you know what I mean?” Jackson said. “We all go out there hoping that doesn’t happen, but they’re definitely a part of football, so we’re just trying to figure it out.
“I don’t know anything, yeah. I was on the other sideline, and I haven’t even seen him yet, so I don’t know anything,” Jackson said. “I’m just hoping he’s okay, like that’s my number one thing. I don’t want to ever see anyone go down or get injured, including myself, so I’m just hoping he’s okay. I want him to have the best season that he’s ever had, so I’m just praying for him for sure.”
Bills options at cornerback after Tre’Davious White injury
We likely won’t know much about White’s situation until at least Saturday when the Bills play their preseason finale in Tampa Bay. He was not going to play in the game, but that’s the next time Sean McDermott will be speaking to reporters.
If this turns out to be a serious injury, the Bills may have to consider trading for a veteran cornerback, or perhaps claim someone after roster cuts are made on Tuesday.
