Warrington actor Owen Cooper wins major award for performance in Adolescence

A TALENTED Warrington actor has won a National Television Award for his breakout role in Netflix series, Adolescence.

Owen Cooper, who is from Orford, was undeniably the breakout star of the smash hit series when it was released earlier this year.

The teenager took on his first professional role as Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old who is the prime suspect in a murder case.

Jamie is arrested following the stabbing of his classmate, Katie Leonard, in a car park.

Just 14 at the time of filming, Owen had never acted before landing the role and starred along side Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty.

The remarkable performance saw him earn huge praise, with many viewers calling for him to win awards.

Fans didn’t have to wait long for Owen to receive recognition for his role in the series, as the teenager now has a handful of prestigious nominations.

This includes a National Television Award, which was voted on by the public and awarded last night, Wednesday.

Owen was up against other talented actors including his castmate Stephen, Rose Ayling-Ellis, Tom Hardy and Brenda Blethyn in the Drama Performance category.

The teenager won the award, with huge cheers heard in the crowd as a clip of his acting played.

Due to work commitments in America, Owen was unable to attend the ceremony in person but filmed a short speech that was played to the audience by his castmate, Amari Bacchus, who accepted the award on his behalf.

“Thank you all so much for this award,” said Owen.

“Never could I have believed that this show, Adolescence, could change my life in the way that it has.

“It’s the fact that the viewers voted for this, it just shows what a powerful impactful show we all got to make.

“I’d like to thank Stephen, Erin, Jo Johnson, Phil Barantini, all the cast a crew members. They were always helpful on set and contributed to it all.

“An extra big thanks to Amari who is there tonight, and I’m sorry that I cant be there but I’m so grateful that I won this award.”

The Netflix series also won the award for New Drama, and some of the cast appeared on stage to accept the award.

The win comes just days before the Emmy Awards, in which the series has a total of 13 nominations.

This includes Owen, who is one of the youngest ever Emmy nominees since the awards started in 1949, and was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

If the 15-year-old Warringtonian wins, he would make history by becoming the youngest-ever male winner in the history of the awards.

Currently, Scott Jacoby is the youngest male winner, after he won Best Supporting Actor for That Certain Summer in 1973 – aged just 16.

The 77th Emmy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 14.
